The formal fluting on this Portland stone chimneypiece reflects the Louis XVI style of France and the neoclassical forms of Georgian England in the 1770s. Robert Adam (1728-1792) pioneered this revivalist style in England on his return from The Grand Tour, incorporating it into many of his greatest works.
