The strict Palladian proportions of this Portland stone chimneypiece, with its crisp mouldings and carved hipped shelf, echo a number of English and Irish house facades of the early 18th Century. The inspired work of Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) was revived and popularised in England by William Kent.
