Like the stone that forms this chimneypiece, the Isle of Portland is a monument to time. The style reflects the Doric order, the oldest and plainest of the orders of classical Greek architecture, with triglyphs on the frieze, punctuated with moulded paterae or roundels above groups of squared pyramids, or guttae.
