This pair of recumbent Sphinxes are in the manner of the Regency Egyptian revival, inspired by furniture maker, connoisseur and collector Thomas Hope (1769 – 1831). Hope took his Grand Tour in Turkey, Egypt and Syria and when he subsequently made his London house open to public view, one room was entirely devoted to Egyptology.
