Medici Urn
Medici Urn

This Campana shaped urn bears a carved relief depicting the legend of Iphigenia. The flared rim has egg, dart and bead mouldings, while the leaf carved, scrolled handles are supported by Bacchic masks. The turned and fluted socle has a distinctive carved collar. Rome’s ancient ruins were a source of inspiration during the late 18th Century. Giovanni Battista Piranesi published a drawing of this vase in 1762 along with his other works. The Medici urn, now held by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the Borghese urn, held in the Louvre in Paris, are the most influential pair of vases from antiquity.
