This engraved brass Irish register grate combines Chippendale style fretwork with Adam engraving. In his great work, the dictionary of English furniture, first published in 1954, Ralph Edwards remarks in the chapter on chimney furniture that ‘Irish register grates were delightfully designed and perfectly spaced, the application of ornament to the material being thoroughly well understood at the time’.
