An early 19th century, Regency period, statuary and Spanish Brocatello marble chimney piece of superb quality, carved in Italy for the English Grand Tour market. Carved in the center out of the solid statuary frieze with the twin cupids, Eros and Anteros (earthly, sexual love and sacred love) standing either side of a flaming altar, decorated with sacrificial ram skulls and swags, Eros holds aloft a lit torch (the fire of love) the other a dove (a symbol of the Holy Spirit). This is flanked by inset panels of Brocatello surrounded by finely carved foliate mouldings. The pilaster shaped jambs with similar panels. The opening with egg and dart mouldings.
