A carved statuary marble chimney piece, Regency, circa 1810. The rectangular
moulded shelf above a carved moulding and a recessed fluted frieze centred by a rectangular, plain moulded tablet, the square moulded and panelled jambs decorated with fan shaped leaf clasps and demi-leaf paterae, headed by plain rectangular panels and raised on squared blocks. The almost severe, modernist rectilinear form of this Regency chimney piece relies for impact on the finely carved fluting
and the fan shaped leaf clasps. Whilst the Regency period is famed for the excesses of the Prince Regent and his lavish building of Carlton House in London and the Pavilion in Brighton a more refined and less elaborate style developed based on classical designs. This chimney piece reflects the refined designs of Sir John Soane (1753-1837) and those of George Dance (1741-1825).
