An English carved Portland stone chimney piece, circa 1880. The recessed, panelled and moulded frieze carved with ribbons, oak leaves and initials is centred by a squirrel. The compound moulded gothic arched opening with concave moulded sides is headed by carved pendants and raised on chamfered blocks. The gothic revival of the Nineteenth century in England was pioneered by A.W.N. Pugin employing British materials. Among his notable achievements were the Houses of Parliament and the medieval court at the great exhibition of 1851.
