A Louis XV carved Breche Violette chimney piece. The serpentine shaped, moulded shelf with outset rounded corners and shaped sides above a conforming, moulded and panelled frieze centred by a richly carved stylised shell wrapped with acanthus leaves and with trailing tendrils of leaves and flowers, the canted double scrolled jambs carved with scaled cartouches surrounded by acanthus leaves above trailing husks all flanking a shaped and moulded opening raised on plinth block bases. The construction of the frieze with the ends sitting on top and over the jambs and the thickness of the marble confirm the 18th century date.
