A late 18th century, Neo Classical chimney piece, probably of Irish origin, carved with allusions of the sensuous pleasures of the night. The moulded shelf above the frieze which is centered by an oval medallion carved with three, winged putti playing musical instruments on a closed curtain. This is flanked by panels of swags of flowers held by ribbons. The pilaster jambs with flaming, hanging lambs from which hang festoons of flowers, above the end blockings are carved with plumb putti one holding a wine ewer the other plays a flute. The aperture is surrounded by rich sienna panels and the whole is raised on squared blocks. Provenance - Sold by the London dealers Pratt and Co. 1946
