The compound moulded inverted breakfront shelf above a rectangular moulded tablet veneered with Sienna marble and flanked by panels of jasper, the moulded opening flanked by acanthus leaf carved volutes with scrolled terminals raised on squared base blocks. The word Jasper means ‘spotted stone’ and is derived from Anglo- French jasper, from the old French jaspe, via a Semitic language, Hebrew, yashepheh and ultimately from Persian. Jasper has been prized since ancient times for its colour and decorative qualities and has been employed to make small objects, jewellery and for inlay in special circumstances.
