The moulded shelf above a leaf carved moulding, the frieze centred by a rectangular tablet carved with a garland of summer flowers, vines and foliage hung from rings below a ribbon and flower carved moulding and flanked by elongated S scrolls of acanthus, the carved and moulded opening with scroll carved corbels decorated with leaf carved cabochons and with tight ‘paper’ scrolls to the sides above pierced and carved trailing husks. Whilst it is almost impossible to attribute this finely carved chimney piece to a particular designer or maker, the names of Abraham Swan (fl 1745-68) and Robert Morris (1702-1754), based on their recorded styles are possible candidates.
