A mid 18th century, George II Palladian style statuary and Sienna marble chimneypiece. Circa 1750. The moulded breakfront shelf of this elegant chimneypiece is carved with lambs-tongue and egg and dart, while the delicately carved jambs boast white statuary corbel brackets decorated with acanthus, from which beautiful inverted bluebells fall. The statuary aperture is gently ribbed and delicately bound with ribbon. The richly coloured Sienna frieze sports a carved statuary marble centre tablet depicting a charming Arcadian pastoral scene – a sleeping, possibly drunk, shepherd boy with his faithful dog dozing at his feet.
